H.C.F and L.C.M :
H.C.F stands for Highest Common Factor. The other names for H.C.F are Greatest Common Divisor (G.C.D) and Greatest Common Measure (G.C.M).
The H.C.F. of two or more numbers is the greatest number that divides each one of them exactly.
The least number which is exactly divisible by each one of the given numbers is called their L.C.M.
Two numbers are said to be co-prime if their H.C.F. is 1.
H.C.F. of fractions = H.C.F. of numerators/L.C.M of denominators
L.C.M. of fractions = G.C.D. of numerators/H.C.F of denominators
Product of two numbers = Product of their H.C.F. and L.C.M.
PERCENTAGES :
================
If A is R% more than B, then B is less than A by R / (100+R) * 100
If A is R% less than B, then B is more than A by R / (100-R) * 100
If the price of a commodity increases by R%, then reduction in consumption, not to increase the expenditure is : R/(100+R)*100
If the price of a commodity decreases by R%, then the increase in consumption, not to decrease the expenditure is : R/(100-R)*100
PROFIT & LOSS :
======================
Gain = Selling Price(S.P.) – Cost Price(C.P)
Loss = C.P. – S.P.
Gain % = Gain * 100 / C.P.
Loss % = Loss * 100 / C.P.
S.P. = (100+Gain%)/100*C.P.
S.P. = (100-Loss%)/100*C.P.
If CP(x), Gain(y), Gain%(z). Then y = x*z/100. [Same in case of Loss]
RATIO & PROPORTIONS:
==========================
The ratio a : b represents a fraction a/b. a is called antecedent and b is called consequent.
The equality of two different ratios is called proportion.
If a : b = c : d then a, b, c, d are in proportion. This is represented by a : b :: c : d.
In a : b = c : d, then we have a* d = b * c.
If a/b = c/d then ( a + b ) / ( a – b ) = ( c + d ) / ( c – d ).
TIME & WORK :
===================
If A can do a piece of work in n days, then A’s 1 day’s work = 1/n
If A and B work together for n days, then (A+B)’s 1 days’s work = 1/n
If A is twice as good workman as B, then ratio of work done by A and B = 2:1
PIPES & CISTERNS :
=====================
If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours, then part of tank filled in one hour = 1/x
If a pipe can empty a full tank in y hours, then part emptied in one hour = 1/y
If a pipe can fill a tank in x hours, and another pipe can empty the full tank in y hours, then on opening both the pipes,
the net part filled in 1 hour = (1/x-1/y) if y>x
the net part emptied in 1 hour = (1/y-1/x) if x>y
TIME & DISTANCE :
=======================
Distance = Speed * Time
1 km/hr = 5/18 m/sec
1 m/sec = 18/5 km/hr
Suppose a man covers a certain distance at x kmph and an equal distance at y kmph. Then, the average speed during the whole journey is 2xy/(x+y) kmph.
PROBLEMS ON TRAINS :
=========================
Time taken by a train x metres long in passing a signal post or a pole or a standing man is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x metres.
Time taken by a train x metres long in passing a stationary object of length y metres is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x+y metres.
Suppose two trains are moving in the same direction at u kmph and v kmph such that u>v, then their relative speed = u-v kmph.
If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the same direction at u kmph and v kmph, where u>v, then time taken by the faster train to cross the slower train = (x+y)/(u-v) hours.
Suppose two trains are moving in opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph. Then, their relative speed = (u+v) kmph.
If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph, then time taken by the trains to cross each other = (x+y)/(u+v)hours.
If two trains start at the same time from two points A and B towards each other and after crossing they take a and b hours in reaching B and A respectively, then A’s speed : B’s speed = (√b : √a)

Cover letters are simply a letter of introduction. In these letters you are explaining who you are and why you are writing to the resume reader. It is a matter of courtesy that you introduce yourself when you are requesting something of them, in this case an interview.

What Instances Require a Cover Letter

My rule is - if you are not shaking hands with the hiring decision maker and introducing yourself, then you need a cover letter to introduce you. If you are shaking hands with the hiring manager, you are introducing yourself verbally and requesting an interview. In this case, hand them your resume without a cover letter.

On the other hand, if you are sending a resume by mail, if you give your resume to a friend to hand in, or if you leave your resume with the hiring manager's secretary then you are not shaking the hiring manager's hand and you need to have a cover letter enclosed with your resume.

Cover Letters Should Be Brief and Simple

Hiring managers only glance at cover letters. They have 50+ resumes to read out of which they will select a few candidates for interviews. I recommend letters be 3-4 paragraphs.

Many people provide lengthy autobiographies in the cover letter. They regurgitate their resume and then some. This is a waste the writer's and reader's time.

Cover Letter Content

Address these 4 topics in a succinct manner and the hiring manager will be grateful.

1) For what position are you applying?

2) How did you learn of the position or company?

3) Why are you perfect for the position?

4) Who will contact who?

I usually cover 1 & 2 in the first paragraph and a paragraph each for 3 & 4.

Writing Your Resume Objective

It's the first thing on a resume after your contact information. Your resume objective may determine a hiring manager's interest in the rest of your resume.

I have seen otherwise perfectly qualified candidates get turned away because, according to their resume objective, they "want to do something else."

When applying for a specific position with a company, make sure your resume objective matches up with the position you are applying for.

When you are putting together a more general resume, either for posting online or for distribution at a career fair, keep the resume objective more general.

Examples of specific resume objectives:

* A position as a Senior Java Software Engineer developing n-tier applications.
* Entry level Electrical Engineer position at XYZ Company.
* SQL Database Developer in the Financial Services Industry.

Examples of more general objectives:

* A position that will utilize my years of experience in application development.
* A position in the Electrical Engineering field.
* A position in Database Development or Administration.

By customizing your objective, the hiring manager (or decision maker) sees instantly that you are a potential fit for the position and that you care enough about first impressions to go that extra step.

AN EXAMPLE RESUME:

got this from sadhikhov but love to share

Is a Curriculum Vitae different from a Resume?

While preparing to write a resume one must have often come across the term Curriculum Vitae. Just another synonym for resume? Not really. At least not when it comes to the U.S. of A. In America the resume and the C.V (as it is commonly known), are rather different from one another. Well, then what exactly is a C.V in the American sense of it? The term "curriculum vitae" translates as something close to "course of life"-- a detailed, lengthy and structured listing of education, publications, projects, awards and work history. Curriculum vitae can sometimes run into ten or more pages. Remember, it is detailed information.

Who needs a "C.V."?

A C.V is required for certain positions, most common of them being educators, scientists and other academia related specialists. Job seekers with extensive academic and professional credentials applying for positions in education or research need to possess a C.V. .A CV is appropriate for PhD's, M.Phils, MFA's, and MA's seeking teaching or research positions. Colleges, universities, and research institutions generally require a CV. It is essential for academic as well as administrative positions in education-related careers. In applying for positions in higher education, the CV generally takes the place of the printed application form. Typically, one is expected to submit a letter of application(detailed), a CV, a writing sample and other supporting documents.

Where is a C.V not needed?

Be sure that you give a C.V only where it is neccesary to do so. It may work against you if a resume was actually expected. Most employers private business, government and the like, anyday look for a brief one-page account of your proof-of-worthiness.

What should be included in a C.V?

 Name, address(es), phone number(s), e-mail address
 Objective: What postion exactly are you applying for?
 Educational background: Academic preparation - College degrees with details
 Relevant work experience : position-related
 Specific skills: Computer programs, lab techniques, etc.
 Publications/ exhibitions/ performances papers etc. submitted for publication
 Current research interests
 Paper/ posters presented at conferences
 Grants received
 Honours, awards and fellowships
 Professional organisation memberships
 Professional services
 Travel
 Languages known and/or other skills
 Personal interests
 References

What to exclude?

Personal details must be strictly excluded from a C.V. Such as age, sex, marital status, race, ethnic background and religion, personal preferences, biases and political leanings etc.

Condensed version

C.V is nothing but a Condensed Version of you and your achievments.So it must effectively summarise all of this information.However, unlike a resume your C.V can be much longer. The CV generally ranges from two to dozens of pages in length, depending upon factors such as the extent of one's research record or the stage of one's career.

Outside the U.S, resume and C.V are synonymous the world over.So use your discretion and prepare a resume or a C.V accordingly, depending on the position and the location you are applying to.

Happy job-hunting
